Update Summary

Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 7.1 adds application-aware processing, guest indexing, inline malware scanning, SOSAPI object-storage targets, and granular Nutanix Guest Tools controls. Availability through Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3.1 began March 19, 2025.

Update Details

Security

  • Adds inline, AI-powered malware scanning that analyzes encryption entropy activity and detects onion links and ransom notes.
  • Adds guest filesystem indexing and inline guest indexing scans to support suspicious filesystem activity detection.

New Features

  • Adds application-aware processing with VSS quiescence, experimental database log shipping, Veeam Explorers integration, and guest VM pre-freeze/post-thaw scripting for PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Active Directory, SharePoint, and Exchange.
  • Adds guest filesystem indexing and global file catalog visibility in Veeam Enterprise Manager.
  • Adds SOSAPI support for object-storage backup targets.
  • Adds granular Nutanix Guest Tools controls for application-consistent or crash-consistent snapshots and optional database log truncation or retention.
  • Adds support for UEFI boot and multiple virtual network interfaces on the backup appliance and workers.

Known Issues

  • Only one Nutanix AHV backup appliance can be added per cluster or Prism Central.
  • IPv6 is not supported; backup appliance communications require IPv4 reachability.
  • Migrate Across Clusters is unsupported and can cause jobs to skip migrated VMs or start new backup chains.
  • Nutanix CVMs cannot be backed up, and increasing concurrent tasks may require additional CVM resources.
  • Guest processing does not support pre-job or post-job scripts, persistent guest agents, file exclusions, Oracle ASM disks, or Kerberos.
  • Only Windows-based machines can be used as guest interaction proxies.
  • Nutanix AHV backups cannot be stored directly in Veeam Cloud Connect or HPE Cloud Bank Storage repositories.
  • Entire VM restore to Nutanix AHV is unavailable from Veeam Cloud Connect, external repositories, and tape; Instant Recovery has separate restrictions.
  • Public REST API limitations include unsupported MFA token authentication, MFA configuration, network changes, notification management, and guest-processing configuration.
  • Instant Recovery does not support ARM VMs, legacy Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV 1.0 backups, or file-level backups from supported Veeam Agent products.
  • SureBackup supports only backup verification and content scan verification modes for Nutanix AHV backups.

Hints

  • New deployments require Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3.1 build 12.3.1.1139 or later.
  • Existing versions 4.0, 4a, 5.0, 5.1, 6, and 6.1 can be upgraded to 7.1 with the Veeam Backup & Replication upgrade.
  • Versions 1.0, 2.0, 2a, 3.0, and 3a cannot be upgraded directly to 7.1; an intermediate upgrade is required.
  • Recommended appliance and worker sizing is 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for the base system, plus 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM per concurrent task.
  • Major appliance upgrades are performed by redeployment, with the previous configuration backed up and restored to the new appliance.
  • Worker updates occur when workers start. Automatic updates can be disabled through the Obtain updates from rpm repositories option.
  • Supported environments require Prism Central pc.2022.6 or later and Nutanix AOS 6.5.x through 7.1.
  • Nutanix AOS 6.8 requires version 6.8.1.6 or later.
  • Nutanix AHV Plug-in 12.7.1.12 and backup appliance 7.0.1.12 are included in the documented AHV 7.1 integration.
