Update Summary

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 8.4 (8.4.0.1457) adds SharePoint version protection controls, a redesigned Restore Portal, new protection reports, TLS between core components, and multiple performance improvements. The release is available starting 2026-04-16. Reference IDs: KB4816, KB4567, KB4821.

Update Details

Security

  • TLS connections are supported between the controller, remote proxies, and PostgreSQL; TLS is enabled by default with default installation settings.
  • Host rollback detection for proxies in a proxy pool helps enforce repository synchronization and maintain consistent repository states.
  • The skipItemUpdate parameter can force skipping item validation in REST API job endpoints to accelerate execution.

Bug Fixes

  • Improved log export performance and stability.
  • Optimized load balancing on proxy pools during restore and export operations.
  • Improved SharePoint backup performance and reduced throttling risk through fewer and more efficient SharePoint Online requests.
  • Improved SharePoint backup and object storage repository performance with more asynchronous processing.
  • Up to 22% faster saving of Exchange data to object storage during backup.
  • A retention retry mechanism automatically restarts interrupted retention tasks.
  • Improved performance of SharePoint restore browsing REST endpoints.
  • Improved performance of several REST API job and restore endpoints.

New Features

  • Ability to choose how many SharePoint file versions to protect: latest version only or full version history.
  • Restore Portal has a cleaner interface and improved browsing flow for protected user data.
  • New built-in data protection reports for OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams, available via REST APIs and CSV.
  • Support for TLS connections between the controller, remote proxies, and PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to specify protected data locations for multi-geo tenants via REST API.
  • The repositoryId parameter is now accepted by the /v8/Organizations/{organizationId}/explore endpoint.
  • The skipItemUpdate parameter was added to multiple job-related REST API endpoints.
  • Host rollback detection was added for proxies in a proxy pool.

Known Issues

  • Upgrade from beta and technical preview versions of v8 is not supported.
  • Automatic upgrade from v7a to v8.4 using the Upgrade wizard is not available.
  • Automatic silent updates are not supported for Linux backup proxy servers.
  • Connections using TLS 1.3 are not supported.
  • Support for NAS SMB shares as backup targets is experimental and will be dropped in future versions.
  • Basic authentication for Microsoft 365 tenants is planned for deprecation; in v8.4 it is only available for Microsoft Entra China via REST API and PowerShell.
  • Microsoft 365 Germany region organizations can be added only through REST API and PowerShell.
  • Microsoft Teams service is not supported for Microsoft 365 China and Germany regions.

Hints

  • Release version is available for download from the Veeam product download page starting 2026-04-16.
  • SharePoint version protection control is available via PowerShell and REST APIs; see KB4816.
  • Starting with v8.4, auxiliary backup applications for SharePoint processing are deprecated; see KB4567 and KB4821.
  • If upgrading from v7.0 or v7a, a previously installed Veeam license file is not automatically detected and must be installed manually after upgrade.
  • After upgrading from v7.0 or v7a, a full backup of Teams private and shared channel messages will run once.
  • For pre-release technical preview installations, remote proxies, pre-release components, repositories, databases, NATS streams, and the C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup365 directory must be removed before installing v8.4.
