KB5074105 updates Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 with quality improvements, new features, and fixes across Start, File Explorer, Windows Update, UAC, and accessibility. It also includes Secure Boot guidance and a servicing stack update (KB5074104).

Update Details

Security

  • Adds DPAPI domain backup key management so administrators can set automatic key rotation, strengthening cryptographic security.
  • Windows 11 24H2 Secure Boot update replaces the 2011-signed bootmgfw.efi with the 2023-signed version on devices with the Windows UEFI CA 2023 certificate.
  • Addresses a UAC-related issue where the PC might stop responding when launching Windows Terminal elevated from a non-admin account.

  • Fixes Windows Update getting stuck when joining the Windows Insider Program from Settings.
  • Improves lock screen responsiveness and File Explorer responsiveness in network locations.
  • Fixes Explorer.exe hanging at first sign-in when certain startup apps are configured, which could prevent the taskbar from appearing.

  • Fixes reversed keyboard character repeat delay labels in Settings.
  • Fixes Windows Sandbox startup hangs with error 0x800705b4.
  • Fixes black screen issues in isolated multiuser environments after upgrade.
  • Fixes folder renaming in File Explorer when desktop.ini and LocalizedResourceName are used.

  • Fixes the Start menu mobile device side panel hide setting not applying for some users.

New Features

  • Cross-Device Resume expands to more Android apps and services, including Spotify, Microsoft 365 apps, and browser sessions.

  • Voice Access setup is streamlined with speech model download, microphone selection, and onboarding.
  • Voice Typing adds a configurable wait time before acting on voice commands.
  • Settings Agent now supports more languages on Copilot+ PCs.

Hints

  • Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices are set to expire starting in June 2026; Microsoft recommends reviewing the guidance and updating certificates in advance.
  • The Windows MIDI Services App SDK and Tools package is a separate download and is currently unsigned, which may trigger security warnings during download or installation.
  • The Secure Boot update for Windows 11 24H2 can cause a Secure Boot violation if the DB is reset or Secure Boot is toggled; recovery media may be required in rare cases.
  • This update is available as a gradual rollout and a normal rollout; feature availability may vary by device.
  • If earlier updates are installed, only the new updates in this package are downloaded and installed.
  • The servicing stack update is KB5074104.
