Update Summary

7.79.0 Agent, released on 2026-05-20, adds major macOS installation changes, new monitoring capabilities, and multiple APM, logs, and Kubernetes enhancements. It also upgrades JMXFetch to 0.52.0 and changes several default behaviors, including macOS system-wide installation and Linux discovery defaults.

Update Details

Security

  • Logs agent, CWS security reporter, compliance reporter, and event platform forwarder now retry HTTP 403 responses when the API key comes from a secrets backend, triggering an asynchronous secrets refresh instead of dropping the payload.
  • The cluster agent readiness probe now waits for the admission controller webhook server to be ready, reducing the risk of missed pod mutations during rollouts.
  • The OTel Agent now supports standalone mode with DD_OTEL_STANDALONE=true, providing Datadog Agent functionality through the dogtelextension extension without a co-resident core Agent.

Bug Fixes

  • The logs agent now retries payloads on HTTP 403 when secrets-backed API keys are refreshed, instead of dropping them.
  • NPM connection payloads now include a process_name:<name> tag for the owning process when process collection is enabled.
  • The kubelet core check now reports CPU and memory request/limit metrics from live container status values when available, improving accuracy after in-place vertical resize.
  • RDS Aurora Autodiscovery now inherits cluster tags onto instances when instance-level tags are not set.
  • The config implementation now uses an improved node-tree model by default, with a fallback option to the previous viper-based behavior.
  • The macOS install process now hides the DMG mount during installation.

New Features

  • Flares now include connectivity/resolved_endpoints.txt showing how intake hostnames resolve at flare time.
  • Added capacity-type:spot host tags for AWS EC2 Spot instances.
  • Cluster Agent now processes select actions on Kubernetes resources and sends status updates through the EVP pipeline.
  • APM trace agent adds a context-aware shutdown API with timeout support.
  • Added a native Go core check for the Datadog CSI driver, replacing the Python OpenMetrics integration.
  • Added DNS monitoring support on macOS using libpcap packet capture.
  • Added the comp/dataobs/queryactions component for Data Observability query actions.
  • Added experimental agent experimental check-config and agent experimental onboard commands.
  • macOS host metadata now includes CPU cache sizes, CPU package count, and hardware platform.
  • The macOS install script now supports DD_INFRASTRUCTURE_MODE and performs a system-wide installation by default.
  • Added Cloud Network Monitoring support on macOS via BPF filters.
  • Added datadog.dogstatsd.offline_duration gauge metric for DogStatsD offline time.
  • Dynamic Instrumentation now supports conditional probes via when clauses.
  • Dynamic Instrumentation now supports probing Go generic functions.
  • The OTel Agent now supports standalone mode with DD_OTEL_STANDALONE=true.
  • OTLP ingest configuration keys now expose explicit defaults matching upstream OpenTelemetry Collector defaults.

Hints

  • Existing per-user macOS installations must be uninstalled and reinstalled to adopt the new system-wide LaunchDaemon mode.
  • The previous macOS install script is preserved as install_mac_os_v1.sh for versions prior to 7.79.0.
  • Enable telemetry.offlinereporter.enabled: true to collect datadog.dogstatsd.offline_duration.
  • Enable data_observability.query_actions.enabled: true to use the Data Observability query actions component.
  • The Linux discovery module (discovery.enabled) and system-probe-lite (discovery.use_system_probe_lite) are now enabled by default; disable discovery in system-probe.yaml if needed.
  • The default Datadog registry list has expanded to include public registries for the K8s SSI gradual rollout feature.
  • The OTel Agent standalone mode removes the need for a co-resident core Datadog Agent.
