Update Summary

macOS Tahoe 26.4, released on 2026-03-16, adds offline Background Assets status checks, Network MIDI 2.0 support, and new StoreKit transaction fields. It also includes fixes for AppKit, networking, login, virtualization, and other system components.

Update Details

Security

  • Address Sanitizer and Thread Sanitizer might hang on macOS 26.4 when building with Xcode 26.3 or older; use Xcode 26.4 for testing.
  • Rosetta notification changes warn users about upcoming incompatibility for Intel-based apps, with allowRosettaUsageAwareness available for managed devices.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an AppKit issue where the window resize pointer did not follow the window’s corner shape.
  • Fixed a Background Assets issue where setting a URL override could break App Store apps using Apple-Hosted Background Assets.
  • Fixed a Background Assets crash that could occur when downloading asset packs.
  • Fixed HFS external media that might fail to mount automatically.
  • Fixed an installation issue where Install macOS Tahoe Beta.app did not work on macOS versions prior to 15.0.
  • Fixed a Touch ID issue where a standard user might not be able to unlock the screen after updating with FileVault enabled.
  • Fixed a networking leak where multiple processes could leak CFRunLoopSource objects with PAC or auto proxy discovery.
  • Fixed a StoreKit issue where Purchase Intents might not be emitted when the app is launched from the background.
  • Fixed a SwiftUI issue where the latest .userActivity was not surfaced as the current user activity.
  • Fixed a SwiftUI issue where inactive non-opaque windows hosting glass content did not update backdrop content correctly.
  • Fixed a virtualization issue where some new macOS Tahoe virtual machine installations could boot to a black screen.

New Features

  • Background Assets can now report offline asset pack status with localStatus(ofAssetPackWithID:) and assetPackIsAvailableLocally(withID:).
  • Background Assets can now make the latest asset pack version available locally with ensureLocalAvailability(of:requireLatestVersion:).
  • Audio MIDI Setup now supports Network MIDI 2.0 sessions in the redesigned MIDI Network Setup panel.
  • StoreKit adds revocationType and revocationPercentage fields to Transaction.

Known Issues

  • Address Sanitizer and Thread Sanitizer might hang on macOS 26.4, iOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4, watchOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 when building with Xcode 26.3 or older.
  • Some M1 Apple Silicon Macs might panic at boot when installing to an external disk.
  • Exchange syncing for Calendar, Reminders, and Notes might fail; disabling Notes syncing can allow Calendar and Reminders to continue syncing.
  • Deleting a boot volume from the Activation Lock window in macOS Recovery might not fully erase the disk.
  • Jobs and Printer Status might not be reflected in Print Center.
  • The availability version for FSVolume.MountOptions and FSVolume.requestedMountOptions is incorrect; these symbols are available starting in macOS 26.4.
  • Multiple implicit SwiftUI animations affecting RealityKit component properties may not combine as expected.

Hints

  • Use Xcode 26.4 when testing applications with Address Sanitizer or Thread Sanitizer.
  • For Background Assets, offline status information is limited and not all status data is available without network access.
  • For Exchange syncing issues, disable Notes syncing in Internet Accounts to continue Calendar and Reminders syncing.
  • Use the booted OS’s “Erase All Content and Settings” instead of Recovery when deleting a boot volume from the Activation Lock window.
  • On macOS 26.4 and later, modify com.apple.ResourceFork by replacing the entire 286-byte range or writing beyond the 286-byte offset on file systems without native extended attribute support.
  • macOS Tahoe 26 is the last release to support Intel-based Macs; Rosetta support for apps ends after macOS 27.
  • Organizations can control Rosetta notification behavior with the allowRosettaUsageAwareness key.
