Update Summary

macOS Sequoia 15 Release Notes for September 16, 2024 cover SDK changes, new APIs, deprecations, and many fixes across AppKit, SwiftUI, StoreKit, and system services. Highlights include security/privacy changes for Finder automation and app group container access, plus updated macOS 15 SDK behavior.

Update Details

Security

  • App Intents: EntityURLRepresentation allowed arbitrary custom URLs without validation.
  • Automation: Controlling Finder now requires approval in System Settings > Security & Privacy > Automation instead of a modal prompt.
  • Security & Privacy: Changing a user's home directory with dscl or dsimport now triggers privacy prompts.
  • System Integrity Protection: app group containers in ~/Library/Group Containers are now protected; access may require proper entitlements or user authorization.
  • System Integrity Protection: apps distributed through TestFlight may be incorrectly prompted when accessing their own app group container.
  • DirectoryService plug-in support has been removed; migrate to Platform SSO.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed multiple crashes affecting iPhone and iPad apps on Apple Silicon Macs when linking frameworks such as AccessorySetupKit, AdAttributionKit, ContactProvider, Core Location, Core Motion, Core Spotlight, MarketplaceKit, RealityKit, UIKit, Video Subscriber Account, and WorkoutKit.
  • Fixed iPhone and iPad app crashes on Apple Silicon Macs when initializing ARSkeletonDefinition, invoking -[UIInputViewController hasFullAccess], or using ObjectCaptureSession.
  • Fixed issues in SwiftUI navigation, sheets, toolbars, gestures, scrolling, and pointer behavior, including NavigationSplitView path clearing and scrollTargetAnchor handling.
  • Fixed StoreKit issues including unexpected API failures, refund sheet errors in StoreKit Testing, VoiceOver reading product titles/descriptions, and tab width in SubscriptionStoreView.
  • Fixed syncing and data issues in iCloud Drive, iCloud Photo Library, Photos, Music artwork display, and Calendar notification snoozing.
  • Fixed several framework and system issues such as encrypted Time Machine backups on AFP servers, Home Videos syncing as Music Videos, and battery drain on Intel laptops with AMD GPUs.

New Features

  • App Store now requires only the final install size plus a small buffer for initial downloads, instead of twice the free space.
  • AppKit adds APIs to request sharing of an existing or newly opened window during presentations.
  • Maps introduces Place ID, new local search result types, additional point-of-interest categories, and a Place Card API.
  • StoreKit adds macOS in-app Offer Code redemption, custom SubscriptionStoreView control styles, hierarchical subscription groups, and new subscription period helpers.
  • SwiftUI adds root TabView toolbar hosting, per-option picker keyboard shortcuts, @Entry for custom environment values, and new window sharing behavior.
  • Swift Charts adds LinePlot, AreaPlot, PointPlot, and RectanglePlot for function and large-dataset visualization.
  • RealityKit adds Catmull-Clark subdivision rendering for supported USD files and Display P3 rendering for virtual objects.
  • Translation APIs now support in-app text translation and Hindi translation across system translation features.

Known Issues

  • @UnionValue types currently only work as intent results; using them as intent parameters or entity properties fails to compile.
  • Create ML 3D object views may flicker or render black, but training is not affected.
  • iPhone Mirroring may time out or disconnect when paired with iOS 18.0 beta 3 and macOS 15.0 beta 4; update both devices to beta 4 or later.
  • Maps point-to-coordinate conversion may be imprecise at high zoom levels.
  • SubscriptionStorePicker may not work correctly inside a container view.
  • SwiftUI views presented with navigationDestination(for:destination) on macOS may fail to update contents.
  • Virtualization: installing the latest macOS beta in a VM on macOS Sonoma may fail; Mail is not usable in macOS VMs.

Hints

  • Application Firewall settings are no longer stored in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist; use the socketfilterfw command-line tool instead.
  • Quick Look Generator plugins are being removed; migrate to Quick Look Preview Extension and Thumbnail Extension APIs.
  • DirectoryService plug-in support has been removed; migrate to Platform SSO.
  • For CFNetworkExecuteProxyAutoConfigurationScript and CFNetworkExecuteProxyAutoConfigurationURL, Swift code may need source changes when compiling with newer SDKs because the return type now maps to the actual Core Foundation type.
  • SwiftUI sheet sizing changed for apps linked against iOS 18 and aligned SDKs; audit sheets and use presentationSizing if needed.
  • When building against macOS 15 SDK, NSToolbar display mode customization is enabled by default for linked apps, and allowsDuplicatesInToolbar is deprecated.
  • App group container access now depends on proper entitlements, Team ID prefixing, or provisioning-profile authorization.
